Banana Chocolate Chip Cake
As mentioned last week, E is really enjoying baking right now. After our first Strawberry Chocolate Chip Cake {that we made twice in a row}, she wanted to make another chocolate chip cake. We had several VERY ripe bananas on hand, so we decided to make a Banana Chocolate Chip Cake.
(E was 4 years and 7Â months old).

This cake was even easier to make than the Strawberry Chocolate Chip cake – we didn’t even need a mixer! E loves hand mixing, so it was right up her alley.
This is what our bananas looked like – they were REALLY ready 🙂 We only ended up needing two for this cake, though.
E practiced measuring
and problem-solving when it was time to get the mashed bananas out of the measuring cup 😉
The bananas, butter, and sugar turned an interesting bright shade of yellow when E mixed them.
E’s particularly fond of using the whisk, and she made sure to try different tools for mixing at different stages.
When the batter was ready, she was able to pour it into the baking pan
and smooth it out herself.
When the cake came out of the oven, it looked a little unassuming.
The chocolate chips had pretty much all sunk to the bottom half of the cake – in fact, I found several stuck to the bottom of the baking pan when I took out the cake. It’s just for looks, but I’d add some extra chocolate chips on top of the batter before baking next time.
It didn’t hurt the taste at all, of course. You could really taste the banana, it was awesome!
This is definitely a firm favorite for using up overripe bananas in the future. I can’t believe I actually threw out several in the past when they were too far gone instead of turning them into something delicious!
Banana Chocolate Chip Cake
Ingredients
- 1.5 cups (= 187 g) all-purpose flour.
- 2/3 cup (= 135 g) sugar.
- 1.5 tsp baking powder.
- 1/4 tsp salt.
- 1 large egg.
- 1/2 cup (= 1 stick or 113 g) melted butter.
- 1/4 cup (= 60 ml) milk.
- 1 cup or about 2 large mashed ripe bananas.
- 1 cup (= 150 g) chocolate chips.
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F and grease an 8x8 inch baking pan.
- Combine flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a medium bowl.
- Mix melted butter, mashed bananas, egg and milk in a separate bowl.
- Stir the dry ingredients from the medium bowl into the banana mixture in the other bowl. You want them to just blend, don't overmix!
- Stir in most of the chocolate chips.
- Pour batter into baking pan and sprinkle the rest of the chocolate chips on top.
- Bake for about 30-40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out of the center of the cake clean.
