Yogurt on the Mirror
Wanna read about another messy baby play activity? N likes all kinds of activities but for some reason, I really get a kick out of the messier ones 😉 Baby Play with Goop is still one of my absolute favorites! {And if you’re more into less messy activities, I have a few awesome suggestions at the bottom!}
Do you remember E’s Shaving Cream on the Window activity? I wanted to do something similar with N, but he’s definitely still too little for shaving cream, and he can’t reach our windows properly yet. {We don’t have the awesome glass door anymore that we used for E.}
I’m so glad that there are usually tweaks and options for making activities work for babies and/or in different environments. In this case, I went with Yogurt on the Mirror – absolutely taste safe, doable anywhere on the floor {preferably outdoors, but indoors on a shower liner or tarp would work, too!}, and a great sensory experience.
(N was 11 months old.)

Materials for Yogurt on the Mirror
- Yogurt.
- Tablespoon.
- Mirror.
- Paintbrushes (optional).
- Silicone spatula (optional).
I used a full-length mirror that we had on hand, but a smaller mirror would work well, too. Ours isn’t shatter-proof, but there was no point during this activity where I was worried about safety issues concerning the mirror.
I put little mounds of yogurt on the mirror and added two foam paintbrushes and a silicone spatula to see what N would do with them.
He went straight for the yogurt
and tasted it, of course.
He soon added one of the foam paintbrushes to his sensory exploration
and proceeded to chew on it. A lot.
I showed him how to use it to make marks in the yogurt, but he wasn’t interested.
He just wanted to chew on the foam – and I ended up taking the paintbrushes away because I wasn’t comfortable that they could withstand the intense chewing.
When he switched to the silicone spatula, I didn’t have a problem with it.
When he’d had enough of chewing and tasting, he used his hands to spread the yogurt on the mirror.
I drew a heart for him, and he smoothed the yogurt out again.
After a while, he crawled right over the mirror
to get a plastic animal that way laying around in the area. He integrated it into the sensory experience
including the taste test 😉
Definitely a very successful messy sensory activity!
When N was done, I washed the yogurt away with the hose and put N into the bathtub. If I was to do this again, I wouldn’t choose whole milk Greek yogurt, though – it was a bit harder to wash away than I’d expected.
