Washing Away Foam Letters

N has been having a lot of fun learning his letters in the bathtub of all places! We’ve previously done Simple Bathtub Art and Introduction to Letters and Bathtub Play with Foam Letters, and this time, we used the same letter puzzle for a Washing Away Foam Letters activity that was both very simple and also great fun.

Materials for Washing Away Foam Letters

  • Light but sturdy letters that can withstand water. They don’t have to be foam, but foam letters seem to be pretty readily available and work well for a lot of different activities in and out of the water. We used a little foam letter puzzle like this one.
  • Small watering can, bottle, or bowl – anything a child can pour water with.
  • Water.

Once again, the set up for this activity was really simple: N removed the foam letters from the puzzle (and snuck in some great fine motor practice!) and lined them up on the edge of the bathtub.

Before I was even able to take a picture, he’d already whipped out his cute little watering can and started watering his first letter.

While he worked on aiming the flow of water just right to knock the letter off the edge, we chatted about the different letters, the colors, which letter he was watering and what color it was, etc.

Finally, the letter started sliding down the side of the tub!

N was pretty excited, and we both had fun cheering the U on on its way into deeper waters 🙂

Sometimes, the letters went the other way, but that was okay, too. It only gave us more opportunities to talk about placement, directions, etc.

Who knew you could learn so much in a bathtub with minimal supplies? 🙂
