Simple Transportation Sensory Bin
Remember N’s Simple Thanksgiving Sensory Bin? E, N, and I all really loved the sensory filler made up of colored rice, dry black beans, and dry corn kernels we used for it. I couldn’t bear to just throw it out after one use, so I kept it around for a while, and finally reused it for this Simple Transportation Sensory Bin.
(N was 1 year and 3 months old.)

Materials for the Simple Transportation Sensory Bin
- Shoe box sized storage bin.
- Rice, dry black beans, and/or dry corn kernels. Any other sensory filler will work great, too!
- Cars, planes, any kind of vehicles, traffic signs, and any other related items you have on hand. I used a set of large wooden lacing beads with a transportation theme. I couldn’t find the exact set online, but this set has a similar theme.
- Applesauce cups.
- Pipecleaners (optional).
As usual, the setup was really simple, and N dove right in.
The taxi was his favorite.
He spent some time experimenting with placing the vehicles into the applesauce cups,
worked out how the applesauce cups fit into each other,
and tried to hold as many of the items at the same time as he could. Flying firetruck, anyone? 😉
Only after he was satisfied with his exploration of the vehicles and cups did he start playing with the sensory filler.
I had some pipecleaners on the table that I was going to add to the transportation sensory bin, but didn’t. While we were cleaning up, N spotted the pipecleaners and wanted to play with them. I showed him how to push them through the holes in the wooden vehicles.
He gave it a good try
but couldn’t quite get it to fit yet.
He liked pulling the beads off the pipecleaner much better 🙂
Once more, I was very happy with how much learning, exploring, and fun took place with very simple materials 🙂 N played with the transportation sensory bin for more than 15 minutes, and spent another 5 minutes or so pulling the beads off the pipecleaners.
