Nature Exploration on a Mirror
A few days after N played with Yogurt on the Mirror, I busted out the mirror again for the far less messy Nature Exploration on a Mirror activity.
It’s always interesting to change the perspective on things by placing them on a mirror.
Here, I grabbed a few natural items from our backyard {grass, pine cones, twigs, and pieces of bark that always fall off one of our trees} and arranged them on top of a full-length mirror that I’d laid face up on the patio.
I’d actually planned to put the mirror in a spot where it reflected the sky when I thought of this activity. That wasn’t possible, though, because it was a time of day where the entire backyard was in full sun, making it way too hot to spend time there.
Watching N, I realized that while being able to see the sky in the mirror would’ve added an extra dimension to the nature exploration, older kids would probably get more out of it.
There were plenty of new impressions for Baby N with just the few items I provided.
(N was 11 months old.)

Materials for Nature Exploration on a Mirror
- Mirror.
- Natural items.
This activity was extremely easy to set up. Older kids could help find items they want to place on the mirror.
N started his exploration with one of the twigs and really took his time checking it out – including chewing on it a little, of course.
He checked out all the items in turn
and made sure to take a close look at himself in the mirror as well 🙂
He chose to explore the pine cones {that he’d had the most experience with already}Â last.
He offered one of the pine cones to me a few times, and I took it, said thank you, then gave it back. He loves that game 🙂
He also enjoyed tossing the pine cones on the tiles and crawling after them
before placing them back on the mirror.
Just sitting on top of the mirror was pretty fun, too 🙂
