Materials for Colorful Soap Foam

Fun at Home with Kids has some suggested measurements but basically, you want a fair amount of dish soap and just a small amount of water. Combine them with either liquid watercolors or food coloring in a bowl

and mix on the highest setting.

With all that dish soap, you get nice stiff peaks quite quickly.

This is what happens when you forget the water 😉 But no worries, you can still add it at any time.

You really want to use a bigger bowl, though! My 32 quart underbed storage box filled up quickly as it was but you could get a lot more foam going in a larger bowl. I didn’t even get close to the 1-2 minutes Fun at Home with Kids recommends for mixing time because there just wasn’t enough room in my bowl.

Still, after three batches, the bottom of the sensory bin was pretty much covered with colorful soap foam.

But because I still had liquid watercolors I didn’t want to throw out {the whole reason I thought to make this colorful soap foam in the first place 😉 }, I added a few more batches.

I used leftover liquid watercolors from our Apple Printing project, so I didn’t measure the amount of color I added. I have trouble measuring liquid watercolors in drops, anyway, but it’ll take you a few good squirts to achieve intense colors like this.

The two pink batches were actually made with red watercolors and I thought I’d added a good amount. Not sure how much it would take to really turn the soap foam red.

    1. You’re welcome! Thanks for taking the time to comment.

  1. Oh snap! Using a hand mixer is genius. I won’t even tell you how I try and make lots of bubbles for sensory play. Lol. Too much water is wasted. 😉 And to add color! My daughter would be ecstatic! Thank you for sharing at our Pinning for Play link party!

    1. Glad you like it, Lauren! It’s definitely awesome stuff, and so easy and quick!

  2. Easy and fun looking! Pinned from Craftulate’s Pinning for PLAY party! Happy to have found you.

    1. Thank you for visiting, commenting and pinning, Laura!

  3. Oh how colorful and fun! We tried something similar last night outdoors in our small plastic pool, but I didn’t use a beater so we didn’t get nearly as much suds as you did. Thanks for the great tip – I’ll definitely try this again with a beater for a better effect!

    1. Thank you, Katie! The mixer really helps with making it (almost) only foam and no water. You could also try a blender or food processor, that should work as well.

And of course water and foam is fun, too! And putting it in the play pool sounds great – more of an invitation to full body sensory play 😉

  4. Amazing Idea and Thank You sooo much!!! my kids want a Wipe Out Birthday Party and I couldn’t figure out fun things for them to fall into other than water – this is perfect!!! Thank You so much for the idea

    1. Now that sounds like fun, I’d love to see pics of your party! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

  5. Liquid watercolours are one of my favourite play things in our homeschool. I think I might try this with my 8 and 9 year olds! (Any excuse for me to get my own hands stuck in ;-))

    1. Liquid watercolors really are awesome! I’m sure even older kids will have fun with this – even if it’s in a different way than a toddler would. Would love to hear how they liked it!

We add babersol or shaving cream to make it thicken up and if you have a sprayer on your sink and only add a small amount of water and use the sprayer to get bubbles you get a lot more as well

    1. Oooh, Elizabeth, I hadn’t thought of that, what a great idea! We LOVE shaving cream, and I can’t wait to try mixing it with soap foam!

  8. My grandkids have fun shavers to shave their face but we gave out of the foam that came with it. Do you think this would be ok to put on their face.
