Halloween Cloud Dough Sensory Bin

We hadn’t played with cloud dough in ages, and suddenly, I felt the urge to make some in Halloween colors. Check out How to Make Multicolored Cloud Dough for the recipe!

You’ll need:

  • Orange, black and white Halloween cloud dough.
  • Sensory bin. {I used a 28 quart underbed storage container and filled it with cloud dough made from 9 cups of flour.}
  • Halloween confetti.
  • Halloween foam stickers.
  • Halloween cupcake liners.
  • Halloween cupcake toppers and toothpicks.
  • Halloween cookie cutters.
  • Spoon (optional).

Note: Cloud dough is messy. Read more about it in the How to Make Cloud Dough post!

I set up the three colors separately in our sensory bin and added Halloween confetti and foam stickers in coordinating colors.

I added a plastic orange leaf-shaped bowl with just a few Halloween themed cupcake decorations, since E had recently had so much fun making cupcakes with Halloween play dough. At the last minute, I added a few plastic Halloween cookie cutters in orange and black that I didn’t get a picture of. I didn’t want to offer too many tools and instead waited for E’s requests.

She asked for a spoon right away when she saw the set up, and those few things kept her well entertained.

She started out inspecting a few foam stickers and checking the cookie cutter imprints

before getting down to the business of making cupcakes.

I loved her technique of getting to the toothpick at the bottom of the bowl 😉

Cause a cupcake needs a toothpick!

E spent a little time exploring the Halloween cloud dough with her hands,

and playing with the foam stickers

but mostly, she made cupcakes.

Orange cupcakes,

and mixed Halloween colored cupcakes.

Some of them were even decorated with spiderwebs.

Such a delicious display of cupcakes for the whole family!

In between, she insisted on getting her key on a lanyard, and while looking for it, she found the rest of the foam stickers and picked a green spider to complete the color scheme of our sensory bin.

I loved how the sensory bin looked when I set it up but I think I may have liked it even better when it wasn’t neat anymore and well played with 🙂

The cupcakes all ended up getting dumped out as part of E’s self-chosen clean-up process before she placed all the rest of the extra items in the sensory bin and put the lid on.

As mentioned above, cloud dough is notoriously messy. The mess from this particular activity was minimal because E was very careful but most of her clothes were still covered in cloud dough. It came right out in the washing machine.

E had such great fun that she’s asked to play with this sensory bin two more times since the first time. She added some fun new ideas for sensory exploration!

I know what you mean about the cupcakes – my daughter seems to turn all sensory play into an opportunity to make cupcakes too, LOL!

This was our first time coloring it, as well! I always just made it plain while there was still a chance that she’d try to eat it. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
