Goopy Car Park Sensory Play

Oh goop! It’s such a wonderful sensory material that only requires two simple materials that you probably have on hand right now. From N’s very first experience with it at only 8 months old to today, we’ve played with it in a variety of ways.

Our most recent adventure with goop was this Goopy Car Park Sensory Play activity! I added some color and a few of 2-year-old N’s beloved toy cars, and he took it from there. He had an absolute blast with it 🙂

Materials for Goopy Car Park Sensory Play

To set up this activity, I put two fizzy tub color tablets in red and blue, a little bit (about 2 tablespoons) of cornstarch, and some water on a cookie sheet with three cars. I didn’t mix the materials, but they combined as N played.

One of the first things he tried to do was pick up the color tablets with one of the cars I’d randomly pulled out from his toy box. The front of the car did seem appropriate for this job, but N didn’t actually have success 😉

I’d set up the activity thinking about all of the car tracks N could make in the goop, and he actually spent quite a bit of time on that.

It worked on the table, off the cookie sheet, too 🙂 {Yep, he was totally wearing his t-shirt inside out AND front to back <3 }

When he was satisfied with all of the ways he could make tracks with his three cars, he decided that the cookie sheet was actually a car park that needed a LOT more cars. So he went and got some 🙂

After he placed each car, he kept going back to his toy box to select even more.

As the cookie sheet filled up, N started looking at it as a puzzle, and I really enjoyed watching him try to work out how to fit all of the cars he’d selected in the available space.

There was very little mess with this goop activity that we did indoors. A few drops of colored water ended up on the table and on the floor, but they wiped away really easily. I quickly rinsed off the cars, and that was it. Even if N had decided to make a mess, there simply wasn’t that much goop, and a thin layer of goop actually isn’t easy to pick up.
