Football Helmets and Cotton Balls
After Simple Football Sensory Bin and Football Helmets in a Muffin Tin, this was our third quick and simple activity using mini football helmets: Football Helmets and Cotton Balls!
This was a really random idea I had – as it turned out, the cotton balls fit perfectly inside the mini football helmets.
(N was 1 year and 2 months old.)

Materials for Football Helmets and Cotton Balls
- Mini football helmets.
- Cotton balls.
- Football Easter eggs.
- Muffin tin (optional).
I presented this activity the same way as Football Helmets in a Muffin Tin, except there was a cotton ball in each helmet and in the football-shaped Easter egg.
N decided to approach the helmets while lying on his tummy this time. {I’ve noticed that he’s started lying flat on his tummy, often even with his head on the ground as well, more often lately. He hadn’t done much of that ever since he started sitting up.}
I don’t know if the cotton balls freaked him out or what, but he quickly decided {for the first time ever} that he’d sit in my lap for this activity.
First, he grabbed the muffin tin and wiggled it around for a bit, watching the football helmets move.
I expected him to dump them out, but he wasn’t interested this time.
Instead, he grabbed one of the helmets and pulled out the cotton ball.
He put it back
just to pull it out again. He did this over and over.
The cotton ball started disintegrating after a while, so N examined the scraps
before moving on to the next helmet.
After playing with this one for a while, he saw one of his plastic animals nearby and decided that he’d had enough of this activity 😉
What else should we combine our mini football helmets with to explore them in a different way? I’d love to hear about your ideas – leave a comment below!
