First Baby Play with Water
This was the first time N played with water as a sensory activity. He wasn’t sitting up yet, so I used a shallow cookie sheet to hold a small amount of water. I added some colorful plastic items {similar to the first time he played with sand}Â but intentionally kept his first baby play with water quite simple.
It didn’t keep his attention for as long as it could have but I didn’t catch him at the best time. Just more proof that you need to follow your child’s lead in presenting activities – and you’re bound to get it “wrong” occasionally. No big deal, just move on and if appropriate, try again at a better time.
(N was 8 months old.)

Materials for First Baby Play with Water:
- Cookie sheet or tray.
- Small amount of water.
- A few lids, spoons or similar (optional).
When I set the cookie sheet out for him,
N came right over to check it out.
He started exploring and splashing the water around right away.
He particularly enjoyed grabbing one of the spoons and banging it against the cookie sheet.
His belly got wet pretty much right away but at first, he was okay with that. Only when he tried to actually scoot over the entire cookie sheet to the other side, did things get too real for him, and he started crying.
I picked him up and figured that his first baby play with water was over – truth be told, it had crossed my mind that it might be too close to nap time when I set up the activity.
But it wasn’t over quite yet. As soon as I’d picked him up, he stopped crying and tried to get out of my arms to get back to the water.
Alrighty then 🙂
There was more splashing
and very deliberate attempts at finding ways to grab items on the other side of the cookie sheet without getting his belly wet 🙂
He played for a few more minutes before he decided to turn over the cookie sheet.
Now he was REALLY wet, and ready for some fresh clothes and his pre-dinner nap 🙂
