Exploring Contact Paper

Exploring Contact Paper: This is a fun little baby play activity {that would work great for toddlers, too} that I saw on Fun at Home with Kids: Exploring Sticky. It was quite a simple activity to begin with, and I simplified it even more. N definitely ended up exploring that contact paper – even if it wasn’t exactly how I’d envisioned it and quite different from the kids over at Fun at Home with Kids 😉

When I said above that this activity went differently than I’d thought it would, it’s not really the whole truth. I did kind of have an inkling that my efforts at taping down that contact paper might not be effective enough to keep an 11-month-old from pulling it off. I thought that if he did, the activity would be over – but read on to find out how it actually went!

The set up was simple enough: A sheet of contact paper with the sticky side exposed, a few pieces of duct tape, and three plastic balls in a box.

I put the purple ball on the sticky side of the contact paper for a start and left the other two balls in the box.

N’s first act? Check the duct tape 😉

He didn’t pull it off, though, and turned to the purple ball when he was done looking a the duct tape.

This did not really get him particularly interested in this activity, though, and he was about to crawl away when I started talking to him about how sticky it was. I put the other two balls on the contact paper to demonstrate, and N started touching the contact paper with renewed interest.

At this time, he’d figured out that he could pull it off, and he wasted no time.

However, the activity wasn’t over! The red and blue balls fell off almost immediately, but the purple ball was stuck to the contact paper pretty securely.

N started really examining the purple ball,

and of course that included a taste test. {He never put his mouth on the contact paper, though, and I would’ve ended the activity if he had. If you want to try this at home, be smarter than me and take some pointers from Fun at Home with Kids on how to tape the contact paper down more securely.}

As N played, the contact paper slowly started wrapping around the purple ball. He really took his time looking at and touching everything.

Just before he was done, N went back to feeling and looking at the duct tape, but he didn’t let go of the contact paper!

In fact, he crawled away holding the contact paper. He only let go when he started playing with something else that caught his interest at the other end of the yard 🙂
