Colorful Bats Memory Game with Color and Number Words

Did you see my Bat Color Matching Game for Toddlers last week? I love those cute bats, and apparently, E does, too, because she didn’t rest until she got her own version of the game: Colorful Bats Memory Game.

I actually hadn’t made a new memory game for her in a while, but she still adores them, and I love how I can follow this interest to help her work on different extra learning objectives. One example was this Mermaid Addition Memory Game I made a few months ago that was a nice challenge for E.

This time, I mixed a literacy learning objective in with some basic math and included the appropriate color and number words.

Materials for Colorful Bats Memory Game

  • Colorful Bats Memory Game pdf file (see below).
  • Two sheets of paper. Heavier paper is better to make sure the images don’t show through on the back of the cards. I actually used photo paper this time as we seem to have a ton that we never use. It worked very well!
  • Printer.
  • Laminator and laminating pouches (optional).
  • Paper cutter (recommended) or scissors.

What’s in the Printable PDF File?

This is a one-page printable that you need to print out twice. Cut the individual cards out along the black lines. There are 20 pairs in all.

Each card shows between one and five bats in one color and a description to match that includes the color and number word.

How to Play a Memory Game

For a full memory game, shuffle the cards and place them face-down on the table in a grid pattern. Take turns with other players turning over two cards at a time to find matches. If you find a match, you get to keep the cards. If there’s no match, turn the cards back over.

Make sure to read the words out loud as you turn over the cards!

I play full memory games with 20 matches with my almost 6-year-old and have for at least a year and a half, but there are many ways to simplify the game and work up to a full game.

You can remove pairs from the game to match your kids’ attention spans, play with cards face up or one copy of each card face down and one face up, leave one of the copies of the printable intact to make a matching mat, leave cards face up after they’ve been turned over once if there’s no match, etc.

Specifically for toddlers, I have a bunch of matching games with fewer pairs and larger cards, like this Bat Color Matching Game (it uses the same clip art as today’s printable) or this Dinosaur Matching Game.

In fact, N was playing the Bat Color Matching Game while E and I played the more advanced version.

But when we were done, N had fun with E’s version, too 🙂
