Car Counting Matching Game for Toddlers
Two-year-old N loves loves loves cars. All of the cars, all of the time. In books, he looks for the cars on every page – and if there isn’t one, he announces it with a sad face.
He’s also been asking me to count items lately {he points at each one and I say the numbers}, and since I’m all about following his interests and combining them in new ways when possible, I changed up the way I normally make matching games a little and added different options for counting practice and an introduction to number recognition up to 3 as well as number and color words.
My little guy isn’t ready for recognizing words or counting himself, but he’ll benefit from hearing counting sequences and getting started on number recognition. Later on, he’ll be able to build on that with familiar materials.
(N was 2 years and 4 months old.)

What’s in the Printable PDF File?
The pdf file consists of three pages of cards with different numbers of cars on them. There are between one and three cars per color in six different colors. The cars are the same on all pages.
One page has a sentence fragment about the number and color of the cars on each card.
One page shows the number of cars per card.
The third just shows the cars.
You can choose whether to print two copies of one page or to mix and match between the different versions.
No matter which version(s) you go with, using one copy as a matching mat and cutting the other apart is the easiest way to play for beginning. For more experienced players, you can cut apart both copies and play at different levels of difficulty up to and including a full memory game with all cards face down.
