Bottle Print Flowers

Making Bottle Print Flowers was E’s idea. She came up with it on a day where she was sick, and it was a perfect quick and simple activity for her.

To make bottle print flowers, you’ll need

  • Water bottle. {Different types of bottles make different prints. It would be fun to experiment with several bottles, like juice or soda bottles.}
  • Tempera paint.
  • Paintbrush.
  • Plate or bowl for the paint. {Has to be big enough to fit the bottom of your bottle.}
  • Paper. {We used watercolor paper.}

We started out talking about which colors we needed. E wanted green. I reminded her of the different parts of a flower and how they’re usually different colors – yep, she remembered that but she wanted them all green. So that’s how we did it!

E wanted a light green, so I told her how she could use white paint to make the green we have lighter. She put some white and some green tempera paint on a plate and mixed it with her paintbrush.

She didn’t have the patience to mix it all completely but the partially mixed paint made for a nice effect.

When she’d had enough of mixing, she grabbed a water bottle and placed the bottom in the paint

then made a print on a sheet of paper.

{We used a bottle that still had some water in it because I was concerned about the stability of an empty bottle but I think an empty bottle would’ve been fine as well. It’s actually not that easy to squish it as long as the lid is on.}

For the center of her flower, E made a print with the bottle lid.

Finally, she used a paintbrush for the stem and leaves.

She did two green bottle print flowers on the same sheet of paper

and made sure to sign her artwork.

She wanted purple and yellow next, and because we’ve somehow misplaced our bottle of red tempera paint, we tried to mix blue tempera with red liquid watercolors.

It didn’t work – it didn’t turn purple, even though we kept adding more red watercolors, and the paint turned out way too runny to make a nice print.

After this, E decided that she was feeling so poorly that she needed to lay down {poor baby  🙁 }.

I finished up the activity with my own bottle print flower.
