Baking Soda and Vinegar Process Art
I haven’t written about a baking soda and vinegar activity in, like, three weeks 😉 {Baking Soda Letters in the Water Table was the last one.} High time for another example of how much fun we keep having with our favorite chemical reaction that never gets old!
For this Baking Soda and Vinegar Process Art activity, we used a canvas of pristine white baking soda that E “painted” with colorful vinegar.
(E was 3 years and 5 months old.)

Materials for Baking Soda and Vinegar Process Art:
- Baking soda.
- Vinegar.
- Eye dropper(s) (optional).
- Liquid watercolors or food coloring.
- Cookie sheet, baking dish, sensory bin or tray.
- Bowls or cups.
I poured some vinegar into a few small plastic cups, and E set up the rest of the activity herself: She poured liquid watercolors into the cups and filled the bottom of the baking dish with baking soda.
She had some fun just running her hand through the plain baking soda
before smoothing it out to serve as her canvas for baking soda and vinegar process art.
E carefully dropped the different colors on the baking soda with an eye dropper in just the right spots.
On a whim, she tried two eye droppers with two different colors at the same time time, and thought it was hilarious.
It looked so pretty! I loved how the colors didn’t mix but just sort of covered each other.
When E had had enough of the eye droppers, she changed gears, picked up a bit of baking soda
and dropped it into one of the cups of colored vinegar. The chemical reaction worked very well! She didn’t want it to overflow, so grabbed a paper towel to absorb some of the bubbles.
When she tried the same process with the other colors, it didn’t work nearly so well,
so she decided to reverse the process and pour the colored vinegar straight from the cups onto the baking soda.
Beautiful!
When all the colored vinegar was gone, she asked for a full cup of plain vinegar and poured it in. Fizzzzzzzzzzzz 🙂
The saturated baking soda feels so soft and squishy!
And it’s even more fun with added water while cleaning up this project!
