Back to School Word Search for Kids

Every year, back to school and fall just creep up on us. This year is no different, and here we are again with temperatures going down (at least on some days), new classes, and new friends ahead.

At the beginning of the school year, or any time of the year, having fun, engaging, no-prep printables on hand can make stressful moments in the classroom much easier by allowing students to work quietly and independently for a few minutes.

Today’s back-to-school word search puzzle fits the bill perfectly and even makes a great first day of school activity.

{If you want to try something a little different without the need to print, I also have an Interactive Back to School Word Search.}

What’s in the printable PDF file?

The pdf file includes three pages:

  • A word search page with colored images.
  • The same word search page with black and white images to save on ink and/or added coloring fun.
  • An answer key that shows the position of the hidden words in the word grid.

A picture of the three pages that are included in the back to school word search pdf file: One page with the word grid at the top, the word bank at the bottom, and three colored images; one page with black&white images for ink savings and coloring; and an answer key.

Both word search pages have a letter grid at the top taking up most of the page that’s hiding the words we’re looking for with this worksheet.

At the bottom, there’s a word bank using school-related vocabulary:

  • books
  • friends
  • learning
  • lunch
  • math
  • pen
  • pencil
  • playing
  • reading
  • teacher

The ten words are hidden in the grid written left to right or top to bottom only, making this a nicely challenging word search activity for younger kids while still being a quick and fun activity even in upper elementary grades.

This no-prep printable is great for working on vocabulary, visual processing, fine motor skills, and more!
