Baby Play with Blocks and a Bottle
Simple baby play is just awesome! Bonus points if it’s non-messy, doesn’t have anything that could possibly be a choking hazard, and it’s entertaining! Perfect for those moments where you need a few minutes of baby entertainment but can’t supervise very closely.
This time, NÂ played with some random wooden blocks we had on hand and with a wide mouthed bottle.
He worked on cause and effect, fine motor skills, problem-solving, and he had fun doing it with simple materials 🙂
(N was 11 months old.)

Materials for Baby Play with Blocks and a Bottle
- Any blocks you have on hand.
- A plastic bottle with a wide mouth, or a jar. {Ours was a coffee creamer bottle.}
This activity is so quickly set up, and it doesn’t require super close supervision – perfect for keeping baby busy while you’re cooking!
I simply placed four different wooden blocks from a shape and color sorting toy in the bottle and handed it to N.
He tried many different ways of getting to the blocks.
One hand:
Two hands:Â
And my favorite: One hand in the bottle while holding it upside down and licking it 🙂
It took him a while to get the blocks out. He’s more the stoic type, but I still think he was pretty pleased with himself 😉
He didn’t show an interest in putting the blocks back into the bottle at this time, so I did it for him.
I love his technique for keeping a hold of the red block while trying to get out the rest 🙂
When he was done with the activity, he took off with the block still in his mouth 🙂
I put the bottle with the blocks inside on his shelf to allow him to do more exploration whenever he felt like it.
A few days later, he decided to work on putting the blocks back into the bottle.
After some trial and error,
he figured it out 🙂
He still has access to this activity whenever he feels like it, and at this point, he definitely prefers dumping the blocks out of the bottle.
