Baby Play with a Water Bottle
In my little informal series on simple sensory baby play, here’s another idea with materials you have in the house right now: Baby Play with a Water Bottle. Make sure to check out my other simple baby play ideas, Baby Play with Rice, Baby Play with Paper and Baby Play with Christmas Lights {my personal favorite so far!}.

Materials for Baby Play with a Water Bottle:
- Plastic bottle.
- Water. {For added interest, you could add some liquid watercolors or food coloring, but it’s not necessary.}
Make sure to wash the outside of the bottle before handing it to your baby, as she’s pretty much guaranteed to put it in her mouth, and several people may have touched the bottle before you bought it.
I kept it really simple and used a regular water bottle with most of the water still inside {and drank the water when N was done with it 😉 }. N wasn’t old enough to have a shot at opening the bottle, so I didn’t bother with any extra precautions.
I stood the water bottle up in front of him and let him take over.
He spent some time looking at it from different angles
and tried to balance on one arm to touch the top of the bottle. While he wasn’t quite there yet at the time, it was still good practice.
Predictably, the bottle fell over after a while, and that made it easier for him to explore it further.
He definitely explored it with his mouth
but used his hands most of the time.
N couldn’t really get the bottle under control and didn’t like it one bit when it got away from him a few times
but Mama made sure to return it to him each time 🙂 For more mobile babies, this could be a great incentive to move around!
Does your baby like to play with bottles? What do you put inside the bottles? Tell me in the comments – and feel free to leave a link if you’ve written about it!Â
