Superhero Graphing Game

Oh my, have you ever seen printable games using spinners? I’ve always had my doubts about how well those homemade spinners work, but never tried it. Until I got the idea for this Superhero Graphing Game into my head. {It may have had something to do with going to watch Batman v Superman a few days ago 😉 }

I was thinking about adding a custom die template, but decided to go ahead and try to make a custom spinner instead to see how it works.

Guess what? It works AWESOME! I’m so happy with this, I can’t wait to play it with E later today. {She saw the file while I was working on it and got pretty excited, too. Before she went to school, she said: “How about you get the superhero game ready and we make some hot chocolate after school so we can drink it while we play?” Love this kid 😀 }

Materials for Superhero Graphing Game

  • Printable game. {Get it at the bottom of this post.}
  • Printer.
  • Card stock or scrapbooking paper.
  • Laminator (optional).
  • Laminating pouches (optional).
  • Pen or pencil.
  • Paper fastener.
  • Paper clip.
  • Manipulatives (if not using the superhero cards on page 5).

What’s in the Printable PDF File?

This printable has three pages that you’ll need to play the game (pages 3-5 in the PDF). To cut down on preparation time, you could skip page 5 (superhero cards to fill the spaces on the game board) and use manipulatives for graphing

Save the file, then print the pages on scrapbook paper or card stock {for some reason, I don’t ever have white card stock, but heavy scrapbooking paper is a really versatile material that I’ve only discovered recently, whether using the colored or the white side}. You can laminate, but I was pretty happy with the durability just using heavy scrapbooking paper.

Prepare the spinner by poking a hole in the center with the tip of a pen or pencil. Just make a small hole, the paper fastener will do the rest when you push it through the hole after threading a paper clip on it.

If you’re using page 5, cut the individual superhero cards apart at the black lines. There are 9 for each superhero, enough to fill the empty spaces on the gameboard.

Play by spinning the paperclip and placing the matching superhero card or your manipulative of choice in the first empty space on the game board. Repeat until one superhero wins by filling up all the spaces in his row first.

If the spinner lands on “Pow!” or “Bam!”, spin again. Or make up your own rules.

Make sure to cheer on your favorite superheroes during the race!

Once the race is won, don’t forget to count the cards and talk about who came in first, second, and third place, and how you can tell at a glance.

Once everyone knows the game or with older kids, just make up your own rules! Maybe every player picks a superhero, and each superhero can only advance on his player’s turn. With these rules, Pow! and Bam! may lead to having to remove a card from the gameboard. Alternatively, Pow! and Bam! could give another turn.
