First Baby Play with Sand

Baby N has become very interested in the activities E and I do together. They’re usually not really appropriate for him, though, and he’s not pleased when he can’t join in.

After a recent activity with fizzy sand and shaving cream that he desperately tried to be a part of, I decided it was time to introduce him to the only material in that activity that was okay for babies to play with – sand!

I kept our first baby play with sand very simple with just a few extra items. Baby N brought one item of his own choice and didn’t let go of it for the longest time 😉

Materials for Baby Play with Sand:

  • Play sand.
  • A few large colorful lids (optional).
  • Small shovel (optional).
  • Tray, cookie sheet or shallow box to hold the sand (optional). {You can just put the sand right on the surface your baby is on; you’ll be vacuuming or sweeping the sand afterwards either way 😉 }
  • Shower liner or towel to put underneath baby and tray.

While I was putting the sand on the cookie sheet, N started to explore the colorful lids. He hadn’t let go of the car for a while, and he wasn’t about to let a little sand change that 😉

When I set the cookie sheet in front of him,

he went straight for the shovel.

It remained his favorite item in this activity but he also spent quite a bit of time touching and exploring the sand with his hands,

and of course banging around the cookie sheet – he always enjoys that part 😉

I told him a little bit about color mixing,

and let some sand run through my fingers and fall on the lids from up high.

He definitely kept coming back to the shovel in between exploring the sand,

but there was no doubt that he enjoyed his first experience playing with sand – unlike baby E who was thoroughly unimpressed after her first experience with it 😉
